What is knee osteoarthritis?
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent degenerative joint condition that affects individuals of various age groups, leading to chronic joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2017-18 National Health Survey (NHS), an estimated 2.2 million (9.3%) Australians currently live with some form of osteoarthritis.
It significantly impacts an individual’s quality of life, limiting their ability to perform daily activities and participate in sports or recreational activities. And exercise has emerged as an important component in managing KOA and related injuries.
Knee osteoarthritis and the power of exercise
Regular exercise offers numerous benefits in managing knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and related injuries. Exercise can effectively reduce pain by strengthening the muscles around the knee joint, providing better support and stability. It also improves joint flexibility, enhancing range of motion and easing stiffness. Additionally, exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight, relieving excessive pressure on the knee joints.
It is crucial to choose the right exercises to avoid aggravating the condition. Low-impact activities are gentle on the joints while providing cardiovascular benefits. Engaging in targeted exercises, under professional guidance, can effectively manage KOA symptoms, improve mobility, and promote a better quality of life for individuals living with this condition.
A proven solution – our new GLA:D program
The GLA:D program is a comprehensive approach designed specifically for individuals suffering from hip or knee osteoarthritis, aiming to enhance their overall wellbeing and alleviate symptoms related to the condition. Developed by researchers in Denmark, this program combines education and exercise sessions to optimise movement quality and minimise osteoarthritic discomfort.
One of the key components of the GLA:D program is its emphasis on education. Participants receive valuable information about osteoarthritis, including the advantages of regular exercise in managing symptoms and enhancing joint function. By understanding the underlying mechanisms of their condition, individuals are empowered to take an active role in their own health and make informed decisions regarding their treatment.
Over the course of six weeks, the program incorporates a total of 12 supervised exercise sessions and two educational sessions led by our certified GLA:D Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists.
During the 60-minute exercise sessions, participants engage in tailored exercises that are specifically designed to address their unique needs and goals. The intensity and progression of these exercises are determined based on individual assessments conducted during the initial screening consultation, ensuring a personalised and effective approach to treatment.
The knowledge and skills acquired through the GLA:D program empowers participants to continue practicing self-management strategies beyond the six-week duration, promoting long-term positive outcomes and self-care for their condition.
